As we get older, many of us wake up feeling stiff, slow, or achy. It’s easy to blame aging, but often the real cause is simply being still for hours while we sleep.
When we don't move, our muscles tighten, our joints feel less mobile, and our circulation takes a little longer to get going. That's why those first few steps out of bed can feel like the hardest. The good news? You don't need an intense workout. Just five minutes of gentle movement can help wake up your body. A Gentle Morning Reset (5 Minutes) You don’t need a workout. You don’t need special equipment. You don’t even need to stand if you don’t feel ready. Here is a simple, safe way to wake the body gently. 1. Seated Spinal Awakening (1 minute) Sit on the edge of the bed or a chair. • Inhale and gently lift the chest • Exhale and soften the spine • Move slowly, without forcing This helps the spine regain natural mobility. 2. Gentle Shoulder Circles (1 minute) • Roll the shoulders slowly backward • Then forward • Keep breathing naturally This releases tension in the neck and upper back. 3. Ankle and Foot Circles (1 minute) Still seated: • Lift one foot at a time • Make slow circles with the ankle This improves circulation and prepares balance for standing. 4. Standing Weight Shift (2 minutes) If comfortable, stand near a wall or chair. • Gently shift weight from one foot to the other • Keep movements slow and controlled This wakes up balance and stability systems. Why This Helps All Day Long Just a few minutes of gentle movement in the morning can: • Reduce stiffness throughout the day • Improve posture and walking confidence • Support joint health • Calm the nervous system • Make daily movements feel easier The goal is not exercise. The goal is communication with the body. These small movements can improve circulation, reduce stiffness, support your balance, and help you feel more comfortable throughout the day. I like to think of it as checking in with my body rather than pushing it. A gentle start each morning can make everyday activities feel easier and more enjoyable. Remember, growing older doesn't automatically mean becoming stiff. Often, your body is simply asking for a little movement to get the day started. The gentle movements of practising Qigong will improve circulation and flexibility of joints. Join one of our classes in Dingwall, Alness or Tain.
